Little Silver Advanced Art Portfolio Requirements
Advanced art is an elective course designed to challenge talented and creative art students. Participants will explore many different art media, while developing a portfolio of work to apply for the VPA program at RBR. This course is being offered to a limited number of 8th grade students during elective period, three days of the six day cycle for the entire school year.
To be selected for the course, candidates must submit a portfolio of original artwork, a photograph, and complete a writing assignment. Submissions will be reviewed by Mrs. Lawlor and school staff members using a rubric.
Some basic supplies are needed to complete the assignments. Please see Mrs. Lawlor with any questions or if you would like to borrow art supplies.
Portfolio Requirements
A. Drawing
Students will submit a total of four drawings from the topics below.
Drawing must be a minimum size of 8.5x11
Drawings must be completed in either pencil, charcoal, pastels, oil pastels, crayons, colored pencils or pen & ink.
Each drawing must be in a different media.
Name, grade, and homeroom teacher’s name must be on the back of each drawing in pencil.
Drawing topics
1. Figure drawing or portrait (pencil only).
2. Outdoor scene in color
3. Still Life
4. Free choice, draw anything you would like (any media).
B. Photography
1. Students will submit one print of a photograph they have taken.
b. Students must include a typed 140 character maximum “tweet” describing the photograph.
The photograph can be taken with any camera. (like digital, film, Polaroid, etc.)
The photograph can be color, sepia tone or black and white.
The photograph can be digitally altered using computer programs like PhotoShop or Picasa (Picasa is a FREE photo editing program from google available online at picasa.google.com/).
C. Writing
Students must complete one of the three writing options below.
Writing assignments can be typed or neatly written.
The writing assignment must include the student’s name, grade, and homeroom teacher’s name on the back.
Writing Topics (choose one)
1. Write a five sentence (minimum) paragraph about your favorite work of art.
Be sure to include the artist’s name, name the piece, medium used and the year it was completed.
Also include a small picture of the work, a photocopy or printed image from the internet.
When writing the paragraph consider why it is your favorite piece and describe the artwork in detail.
2. Write a friendly letter to your favorite artist (one paragraph minimum).
Take the opportunity to ask them questions, send them advice, offer criticism or compliments.
3. Create a Venn diagram comparing two different works of art.
Be sure to include the artist’s names, names of the pieces, media used and the years they were both completed.
Also include small pictures of the works printed from the internet or photocopied.
The Venn diagram must have at least nine bullet points including both similarities and differences.
Grading
The submissions will be reviewed by a panel using a rubric and graded on the characteristics below. All submissions must be handed in on time and all assignments must be complete.

ability of the tweet to give an accurate and interesting description of the photograph.
